Stellan Holm Gallery in collaboration with Lisa Jacobs Fine Art is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition of the Bababad Paintings with the preeminent New York-based artist William Anastasi. Six paintings will be shown from the Series. Each work consists of an enlargement of the letters from the first of the ten ‘thunderclaps’ in James Joyce’s final work, ‘Finnegans Wake’. It has found its way into the soul of his work and literally onto canvas. The series, begun in the mid-eighties, is more than one-third completed—with two to five letters per work—representing the sound of the fall of man, perhaps the deafening thunderclap accompanying the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Try and say it aloud three times quickly. But wait. Is it not more enjoyable to look at each letter as he has neatly blown them up from his copy of the Wake and transformed them into arabesques of pulsating line and color that quiver and float through the visual space of his canvases. Anastasi has the habit of reading aloud to himself declaring that the text’s meaning and power increases with both senses at work. The paintings are partially done ‘unsighted,' without as Anastasi says consulting his ‘aesthetic prejudice-of-the-moment.’ To memorialize his 50-year preoccupation with the Wake as well as a double homage to two of his heroes in literature and art, James Joyce and John Cage, Anastasi has created this series as electrifying as a flash of lightning with a simultaneous crash of thunder.

Jenny Watson was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1951. She majored in painting and later took an Education qualification. She always creates works which reflect what is on her mind, memories of childhood and her relation to the outside world. She often paints on colourful and patterned fabric or linen and also makes works on paper. More specifically she paints animals and situations she directly experiences and memories from her suburban Australian upbringing. Up to this point in her career she has had sixty solo exhibitions in Australia, as well as more than fifty solo exhibitions in Europe, Asia, India, New Zealand and the United States. She was the Australian representative in the 1993 Venice Biennale. In Japan, she had the exhibition entitled "Child's Play" at Art Gallery, Yokohama Museum of Art in 2003, shown here again. The new works exhibited in Transit gallery were made at CAMAC, Marnay-sur-Seine, France in July and August 2014, using locally sourced fabrics such as red and maroon furnishing fabric, chiffons, and voiles.
