Read interview/Danish
The Danish artist Jes Brinch has lived and worked in Vietnam since
2003. The exhibition at Gallery Kirke Sonnerup, which is his most
important in Denmark in the past 3 years, presents an ambitious
installation by the artist.
Jes Brinch uses the fantastic meeting of different cultures as a source of inspiration and a positive motivation.
One of the focal points of the exhibition is cultural relativity and
the thought-provoking differences between Denmark and Vietnam, such as
different lifestyles, values and symbols.
The installation’s different elements are objects found in Vietnam,
objects typical of Vietnamese culture, objects that may seem strange
and bizarre judged by Western standards. These objects are joined by
fantastical works created by the artist himself. Combined, they form a
creative installation built into the gallery space.
The exhibition revolves round the concept of leaving one’s own cultural
background, about the attempt at losing the seemingly innate Danish
perception of life, and about how one’s personality can be limited by
one’s cultural background. Brinch’s goal is not to criticize or to
praise either perception of reality, but rather to disconnect from all
preconceived perceptions, so as to be able to perceive freely and
without any restraints.
Over the past 15 years of working with installations, Jes Brinch has
developed a free, open and dynamic artistic practice that is
characterized by improvisation and spontaneity in the construction of
the physical art work. This is also reflected in the exhibition itself,
since an important part of the installation work is created in the days
preceding the opening.
This will be an exhibition that is guaranteed to provide food for thought as well as entertainment.
The exhibition has received support from Kunstrådet.
