Morten Tillitz was born in 1965. He grew up in Avedøre Stationsby, and
attended the Jutland Art Academy and the Art Academy in Kiel in
Germany.
Morten’s works are made out of plaster, paper and water color paints.
He uses plaster boards, which most people know as a material used for
construction. From these he creates new, crooked, strange rooms,
platorms or shelves, which he paints his figures on. The figures have a
color spectrum painted across their faces, which makes them either
partially or completely anonymous, but at the same time one senses a
difference in their emotional state. Perhaps this opposition between
the real and the representative bears witness to wishful thinking, as
if something is to be given back to those who are represented; or
perhaps as an insistence upon the illusion of the room; or perhaps just
as an undefined aspect.
Steinunn Helga Sigurdardóttir was born in 1960. She grew up in Vik in
Myrdal in Iceland, attended the Art Academy in Iceland and the Art
Academy in Düsseldorf under Jannis Kounellis. Steinunn has lived and
worked in Denmark since 1993.
Steinunn works with drawings and sculptures. Her new work represents
quite a jump from her previous work, which was related to minimalist
installations that revolved around the idea of time and social aspects.
The new pieces are rooted in the figurative, the colorful, the
spiritual and the feminine, but they are also concerned with the
consumption of time to create the works. They are not merely feminine
and sweet, no, they are too much! There is a consequent attempt at
being nauseating, exaggeratedly sweet, obnoxious – one is on the verge
of asphyxiation or claustrophobia. But when one has looked at the works
for a while, their dialectical character emerges, and one surrenders to
them. The innocent and the romantic, along with the mysterious and the
spiritual, are brought to life in these pieces.
Morten and Steinunn have worked together on several previous occasions,
for example they participated in arranging Camp Lejre in 2001. They
have titled their exhibition at Gallery Kirke Sonnerup no.1.
