Stalke Gallery is please to announce the opening of its new premises at
Vesterbrogade 184. After more than ten years and 150 exhibitions in the
"underground gallery" in the backyard we have chosen to treat ourselves
and our artist with a smaller but very charming space with big windows
facing the street.
With Stalke's newly opened space at Kirke Sonnerup Gallery and the
ongoing series of Stalke Out of Space projects our idea is to run
Stalke Gallery in Copenhagen as a more classical gallery in the future.
Nevertheless we have made room for a permanent project space which will
present different projects parallel to the other exhibitions at Stalke
Gallery.
We are excited to present a dialogue between Albert Mertz and Nils Erik
Gjerdevik as out opening show. Mertz passed away some thirteen years
ago, but his many-sided work with its unique combination of humorous
pop-cultural sensibility, experimental drive, conceptual acuteness and
spiritual dedication still seems full of vitality and keeps inspiring
contemporary artists and current discussions on art. Thus, last time
Stalke Gallery showed Mertz it was one of his students from the
Art Academy, Jes Brinch, and Søren Andreasen who curated the exhibition.
Now it is Nils Erik Gjerdevik's turn to hang Mertz' work on the walls
of Stalke Gallery. Or to be more precise on the walls that Gjerdevik
has painted directly on. In his continuous exploration of the magic and
complex universe of the surface has worked with murals before, but this
exhibition is the first time that they provide the background for
another artist's work. Gjerdevik shows lesser known work by Mertz from
the 70s and 80s and he will create a both visual, conceptual and
physical space for a dialogue between the two artists, in which the
preoccupation with color, compositional embarrassments and doubt as a
sign of health will be among the topics discussed.
The exhibition is realized with the help of Lone Mertz.
