It is with great pleasure that Stalke Gallery opens Peter Rössell’s
first solo gallery exhibition in two years. The exhibition contains a
series of new works that shows important aspects of Rössell’s
development over the past couple of years.
Peter Rössell´s new pieces are like shattered mirrors that splinter,
encrypt and recompose, while still reflecting a recognisable exterior
reality. In the works the icons of day-to-day life are put together in
a way that resembles the optic cavalcade that people experience every
day – whether they switch between a myriad of TV channels, drive
throught he city, leaf through a magazine or surf the increasingly deep
internet. The optic and conceptual chaos in these new works resonates
with our experiences and appears disturbingly familiar. In these
insistent and unnerving pieces Peter Rössell reflects upon the visual
and informative bombardment of modern life.
Rössell´s apparently chaotic montage of pattern, text, photo-realism,
graffiti and virtually any accessible visual language gives these works
a very urban quality. The canvasses appear to be excerpts that have
been torn off the walls of the city, where the signs and tags of
several generations are visible simultaneously. Useless images are
saved from the rubbish, combined and revalued. However, the irrational
combination of elements cannot be explained, but should rather be seen
as a result of conscious decisions in the studio to create a similacrum
of a contemporary and cosmopolitan visual chaos.
