Galleri Kirke Sonnerup has the pleasure of inviting you to
the opening of the exhibition
REALITY
For a long time, it has been the gallery’s wish to arrange this
exhibition project with photographic works by 19 artists selected from
different generations. All of the chosen artists are currently
established on the international art scene, and they all work with
photography in one form or another. The exhibition will be an
exploration of the concepts of “reality” and “real life”, and will
challenge the perception of photography as an objective representation
of reality.
As a media, photography is a window to the world, a window that the
artist opens for us. Photography is subject to the artists’ personal
angles when they see the world through the eye of the camera. At the
same time, it is connected to reality and cannot escape these ties. A
photograph is situated somewhere between the artist and the object, and
it may be said that a photograph captures reality while at the same
time showing how difficult it is to capture it. The artists in this
exhibition do not work with photography as a documentation of reality,
but rather as a representation of it, and they reveal photography to be
of a very subjective nature. Since the beginning of the 90’s,
photography has been one of the most important media on the
international art scene, an the Gallery is therefore particularly proud
to be one of the first in Denmark to have focussed on this media.
Sam Jedig is the curator of the exhibition and has selected works from
his private collection. Furthermore, works have been borrowed from
Danish collectors, and new works have been borrowed from the artists
themselves. Kristleifur Björnsson from Iceland is presented for the
first time in Denmark, and from Denmark and Austria,
respectively, Christian Falsnaes and Bella Angora are also presented
for the first time. The two latter artists will show a performance at
the Gallery Kirke Sonnerup this spring at the occasion of Jes Brinch’s
upcoming solo show.
An important aspect of the purpose of Gallery Kirke Sonnerup is to
present art of a high standard outside the city limits of Copenhagen in
four yearly exhibitions. The Gallery has 300 m2 of exhibition space,
and has recently concluded an extensive presentation of the Danish
artist Albert Mertz, curated by his fellow artist and countryman Peter
Holst Henckel.
The exhibition Reality will present works by the following artists:
