Sam Jedig (Denmark) fist solo exhibition In Iceland will take place at
the exhibition space ”Galleri Kambur” in the period from 10.6.2006 to
2.7. 2006 July 2006. The opening is Saturday, June 10th at 3pm.
The exhibition is titled ”Wish you were here”, and symbolizes a journey
into the mystery of the human body. The show includes two video
montages as well as an installation of works on paper from the last
journey in France in February 2006 with the title “No More
Protection”
The video montage ”Wish You Were Here” shows a series of collage that
put humans together as if they were a great mystery of the universe, or
a humorous experiment in the world of art.
We follow a long journey from one world to another. Erotic creatures,
always looking for the perfect body. They are as seductive and
titillating as advertisements, but at other times also grotesque and
demonic, created by a mysterious universe where nothing is the way it
usually is. The figures struggle to create themselves and use tricks so
as to be seen and loved. They borrow fragments from the recognizable
world: fashion pictures, children’s paper dolls, images from the world
of art, while other grotesque creatures watch them, and they play a
game that we seem to recognize. We live in a world where the control of
the body is an important criterion of success, and, whether we want it
or not, we are all drawn to this exterior.
Sam Jedig’s works ask relevant questions about how we see ourselves,
the world around us, and how it is presented to us through mass
culture. He does this by altering the images of the world, as we know
it, by putting these images together in an unexpected way. Sam Jedig’s
basic thesis is that “the real world” is only as real as we want it to
be, and that, right below the surface of this world, there is a
multitude of other worlds that are just as real.
Since the beginning of the 1980’s, Sam Jedig has worked with art, but,
parallel to his work as a creative artist, he also worked as a curator
through Stalke Gallery and Stalke Out of Space. These activities are
still a great source of inspiration for his art.
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday kl. 13- 18.
