Vu Thi Trang: Ordinary life in Vietnam today

Vu Thi Trang is a female Vietnamese artist who was born in 1974 in Thai Nguyen, a province north of Hanoi in northern Vietnam. The exhibition presents a series of 10 paintings by Vu Thi Trang depicting the conditions of womens’ lives in contemporary Vietnam.

The artist takes her point of departure in personal, real-life experiences. The subject is daily life in Vietnam, whether it be in a village or in the city, with its common problems such as suppression of women, alcoholism, violence, poverty and the quest for success in the big city.

Vu Thi Trang is a self-taught artist, and her motifs are personal, simple and direct. Her paintings give a clear notion of how Vietnamese women experience life today. Vu Thi Trang belongs to the generation of Vietnamese to have grown up after the war; a generation that constitutes the majority of the population, but whose everyday life is little known here in Denmark. Vietnam is undergoing speedy development and is very different from the image of Vietnam from the war-torn era 30 years ago. Vu Thi Trang’s art gives an important insight into the general conditions of contemporary Vietnamese society that this generation lives with.

Vu Thi Trang is a unique Vietnamese artist due to the sole fact that her work displays a contemporaneity and documentarism in its content, an innovation and originality in its visual expression, and a freedom from the academic Vietnamese tradition. In short, it is an innovator of Vietnamese art that may now be seen for the first time by a Danish audience.

In connection with the exhibition, the catalogue Vu Thi Trang: Ordinary life in Vietnam today, will be published, including reproductions of the 10 paintings exhibited along with the artist’s own comments and life history, related in an unsentimental and individual style. The 40-page catalogue is in Danish and English.

The catalogue has been published with support from The National Council for the Arts.
