The Exchange and the Death
Stalke Out of Space and Flink has the great pleasure of announcing the exhibition The Exchange and the Death
November 18th. from 5 to 8, Nørre Alle 1, 2200 Copenhagen , Denmark
The idea for this exhibition was inspired by the great discomfort surrounding the most predominant ideology within the financial world, more specifically referred to as liberalism and marketing fundamentalism: with “the invisible hand,” as Adam Smith metaphorically describes it, the market regulates itself, resulting in a win-win situation. The fragility of this ideology is demonstrated quite obviously by the rising number of financial crisis within the last several years.
The artists can ask the question of whether or not the art’s instruments can play a critical role in an economical situation which is so complex, that trite, leftist propaganda art would otherwise be meaningless.
Central to Sebastian Quedenbaum’s works is the representation of the consequences of an economic system as experienced by the individual. As Richard Sennett describes it in his book “The Flexible Person,” solutions are ascertained by hierarchies, along with a rising sense of insecurity within the work and living environments, and the resulting shift of responsibility to the individual in which the person feels coerced to constant personal evolution inspired and fueled by existential anxiety.
Sebastian Quedenbaum’s artistic investigation is not limited to one decided style or medium. He uses instead varied approaches and medias: reliefs and glaze paintings inspire, among other things, associations to socialistic realism, Nazi art’s Kitsch and propaganda art. The more critical opinions are not always evident, but are instead often camouflaged as a tribute to capitalism. Hence, there occurs an irritating, poetic space, in which the viewer him or herself can decide upon a position.
Collapse is the downside of the dogma of eternal growth. Within the individual there arise symptoms of burnout and depression, whereas global symptoms manifest in the form of bankruptcy within firms, banks, and whole states. Thus, finite is the enemy of capitalism: the termination of the workday, the termination of all of earth’s resources, or the termination of human life as we know it.
Death is also the theme in Fabian Weinecke's works, but not in a programmatic sense. His images, which are often characterized as intimate miniatures, are entirely developed from the color as a medium. His image compositions are more intuitively founded, rather than calculated. Although his images in many cases cite the paintings’ historic heritage (i.e. Carl Spitzweg, symbolism, or Francis Bacon), he maintains his own unique imagery. This can be seen first and foremost in the suggestive power of the characters which inhabit his landscape: archaic feminine figures and skeletons which seem to awaken the painting, bring it to life, and make the images his own. Fabian’s works combine humorous impulses with a great respect for the painting tradition.
We look forward to welcome you to the opening on Friday November 18th. From 5 to 8 pm

me perceive place
Performance
video by Bella Angora
The performance
project „me perceive place“ by Bella Angora was developed for the Vienna Fair 2011
and focused on psychological and physical options and attempts in order to
place yourself within the fields of different social systems. Bella
Angora was taking place on the lap of the approximately 200 art fair
visitors within the frame of one-to-one-performances in order to start an
exchange regarding this complex of themes by using different levels of
perception.
Always one person
could enter the performance box that was placed in a booth of the art fair to
perceive a 1:1 experience with the artist on several perception levels. The
visual perception channel was fed by a music video. The soundtrack to the video
had served the additive perception that one could hear over a headphone. At the
same time Bella Angora was sitting on the lap of the viewer, singing the
vocals live and directly into the second ear of each person. By doing so
she was triggering the physical perception channel. The space in the
box was tiny, the closeness huge.....
The visitors of
the art fair had the opportunity to step out of the art market situation
for a brief moment into a quite enraptured and unreal ambient. The here
presented video shows a selection of the performances.
The Vienna based
artist Bella Angora is collaborating with Gallery Stalke since many years
and performed/exhibited at different places in Copenhagen like Overgaden,
Gallery Dunk!, Copenhagen Alternative Art fair, Art Copenhagen or Gallery
North.
In relation to „me
perceive place“ Bella Angora will present the performance „Darkroom“ on
the 15th of September 2011 at Kunsthallen Nikolaj. This project
is working with similar mechanisms like „me perceive place“ but
furthermore is treating another sub theme. With „Darkroom“ the artist
wants to break expectations that we are having due to certain
conditionings as well as sharpen our senses by building a special room
installation.
The term
„Darkroom“ relates to more or less escalating sexual practices – in
this special „Darkroom“ the kind of touch is different: sitting on a lap
(like a child) and the touch of the breath that is reaching the ear when
Angora is singing....Both two very „innocent“ actions that also
implicate a kind of sexual attraction as well. These totally soft,
sensitive and reduced actions want to communicate the need to perceive
informations on a more subtile and differentiated level that is standing
in opposite to our mostly very loud and aggressive surrounding that
often comes with an overdose of sensual penetration.
The room installation
will allow the audience to watch this very intimate situation from outside
by viewing through optical lenses that are embedded in the walls of the
room. This will give the whole situation a strong voyeuristic touch and by
entering the „Darkroom“ the viewer is changing roles from „observer“
to „observed object“ within two steps.....
We look forward to welcoming you to the opening on
Friday September 9th. From 5 to 8 pm

FRITHIOFF JOHANSEN
Aknowledging, as he does, his debt to the age-old traditions of art, Frithioff Johansen still works with the classic materials used in painting, sculpture and graphic art. His own inherent curiosity has, nonetheless, taken him a long way, in terms of trying out new forms of impressions. Science and technology have provided one of the main sources of his inspiration for his work for many years.
Johansen has won international renown for his work with lasers and holograms. His magnum opus to date is probably the laser sculpture "Chaos Temple" which has become something of a symbol for the town of Holstebro. Other major works include the tower sculpture "Sfirot" in the town hall square in Billund, "A Kind of Entropy" at the Flakkebjerg Research Institute, "The Virtual 'A'" in Kolding and the light sculpture "VD" in Skanderborg. All these works include moderne technological tools such as computer work, lasers, holograms, fibre optics and LED light.
This stamp is inspired by recursivity. In a Dutch university's mathematical class you may be entertained by the metaphorical concept "The Droste effect". It refers to cocoa packing with a picture of a nurse with a tray with a cocoa packing with a nurse etc. In Denmark we are tought "The Ota Solgryn effect" by former professor Flemming Topsoe , who used an old oatmeal packing showing a running boy carrying an oatmeal packing with a picture of a boy etc. Have a look at: http://www.frit-johan.dk/ota_movie.html
Well - here we have a stamp with a picture of a stamp with a picture of … etc.
