Nikolaj Recke’s Artstamp from 2010 is a deeply personal and poetic project that bridges memory, landscape, and artistic investigation. The series was inspired by a small stack of Polaroid photographs taken in the late 1960s by a friend of Recke’s father, who had traveled through the American Southwest. As a child, Recke was shown these images alongside bedtime stories of cowboys and Native Americans, creating a lasting fascination with these mythologized landscapes.
More than four decades later, Recke embarked on a journey to locate and rephotograph the same sites: the Painted Desert in Arizona and Monument Valley in Utah. With a mix of emotional resonance and conceptual rigor, Artstamp revisits these iconic views and transforms them into miniature commemorative artworks. In doing so, Recke reflects on time, authenticity, and the role of photography in preserving personal and cultural myths.
The Artstamp works function as both intimate memory objects and formal investigations of landscape as symbol—marking the continuity between past and present, between inherited dreams and lived experience.
