The Danish-Norwegian artist Nils Erik Gjerdevik (1962–2016) became a significant presence at Stalke Galleri from the mid-1990s onwards. Through his non-figurative paintings, drawings, and ceramic sculptures, he consistently challenged conventions of what a painting could look like and how it could be experienced.
At Stalke Galleri, Gjerdevik found a central platform where his works entered into dialogue with both Danish and international artists. A particular highlight was his major joint exhibition with Albert Mertz, where the encounter between two generations created a historic moment in the gallery’s program.
Gjerdevik’s practice was characterized by unusual formats, unexpected colour combinations, and compositions that brought opposing ideas together on the same surface. His exhibitions at Stalke Galleri clearly demonstrated how he helped shape the development of contemporary art in Denmark throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s.
